学习Cheesy
There’s not much cheese in China. Except for this CD, perhaps! It’s called 10 Cheesy Hits from the ‘80s. Why do you think they’re called cheesy?
但是这张CD除外哦!CD的名字叫“10 Cheesy Hits from the ‘80s.”
When do people say “cheese”?
Oh, I remember. Of course. It’s when they are posing for a picture! They say “cheese” because it produces a smile shape in their mouth!
Exactly. So what might ‘cheesy’ mean when it’s related to cultural products? What would you expect ‘10 Cheesy Hits from the ‘80s’ to sound like?
Hmmm… Could they all be happy, smily songs?
1. Hi, Kiele. Hey, Kiele, do you like Cheese?
2. Hi, Matthew. Oh, cheese? Well, I have tried it. But I can’t say that I really enjoyed it. I know all foreigners love it.
3. Well, actually, most people in Europe do like to eat Cheese. But not me. I also dislike it, actually.
4. Wow! No wonder you came to China.
5. Yes. There’s not much cheese in China. Except for this CD, perhaps! It’s called 10 Cheesy Hits from the ‘80s. Why do you think they’re called cheesy?
6. Is it because they stink?
7. Maybe. We could describe someone’s socks, for example, as ‘cheesy’ if they hadn’t been washed for a long time. But in this case, it’s different. When do people say “cheese”?
8. When they want you to bring them some cheese, perhaps?
9. Hmm…
10. Oh, I remember. Of course. It’s when they are posing for a picture! They say “cheese” because it produces a smile shape in their mouth!
11. Exactly. So what might ‘cheesy’ mean when it’s related to cultural products? What would you expect ‘10 Cheesy Hits from the ‘80s’ to sound like?
12. Hmmm… Could they all be happy, smily songs?
13. You could be right! Yes. I think this is an important part of what ‘cheesy’ means. What other things, do you think, could be cheesy?
14. Well, TV hosts or radio hosts could definitely be described as ‘cheesy’, I’m guessing. They’re always trying to keep everybody happy, even trying to describe the weather in the most positive way!
15. Exactly. Hosts are always annoyingly cheesy. And you could also describe clothing as ‘cheesy’.
16. That would be bright colours, I guess. Not very subtle.
17. Yes. Cheesy things are things that cannot easily be taken seriously. They are funny.
18. Do you mean that ‘cheesy’ is something like cheap?
19. Yes it could be. But it’s closer to ‘bad taste’. And of course, there are lots of reasons other than lack of money for people making bad taste choices.
20. So would you say that ‘cheesy’ is usually a bad adjective?
21. Oh, no. Modern people deliberately wear, buy and say cheesy things as a kind of joke. They call it ‘irony’.
22. Hmm… Irony… You mean they want you to laugh at them. They want to know why you’re laughing at them. But they don’t want you to know that they know you’re laughing.
23. Yes that’s exactly what they want. Aren’t people strange?
24. They are!
